The Restoration of Education
It has become clear what the course of action must be in order to truly reverse the downward spiral of the last century in America. What has occurred is very simple to understand and so is the solution.
The founders of our nation understood that the only way the nation could continue to be a free republic is if the people were educated in their system of government and morality. Only an informed and moral population could resist the inevitable urge by some people to alter the system in response to each emergency and to try and fix all social problems through direct action by the federal government. The founders clearly understood the dangers of any interference, good or bad by a central government into the lives of individuals and articulated those fears into all of our founding documents.
If your goal was to steadily increase the size and scope of the federal government you would not be able to do so if the people were educated in the principles of our system of government. The population would resist each attempt to centralize power and reverse any successful power grabs given enough time.
The early 20th century progressives realized this when their early attempts to implement centralized planning were outright rejected or later thrown out by the courts. They realized that the only way to successfully continue moving their agenda forward would require a slow reeducation of the population and a revision of history. It is no accident that the history of the creation of the constitution and the principles of that document are no longer being taught in public schools. It is no accident that the history books have been changed to no longer mention the religious beliefs of the founders and the deep convictions they had in the importance of morality in maintaining our freedoms. It has taken a century of slowly changing what is taught in order to produce a population that is largely unaware of the miracle that is our system of government.
The solution to this problem will require each and every one of us to participate in the process of reversing the reeducation of the population. Not until the vast majority of Americans fully understand what is great and unique about our system of government can we hope to undo the vast centralization of power in the federal government.
What to do, starting today:
- We must educate ourselves, become students of history and our system of government.
- We must educate those around us starting with our own children.
- We must become actively involved in some way in the public education system.
Step 1 - Education Ourselves
In my opinion step 1 should begin with reading the following books:
- The 5000 Year Leap
- The Road to Serfdom
- A Patriot's History of the United States
The 5000 Year Leap is without a doubt the essential starting point for anyone looking to understand the founding of America. I intend to list the 28 principles described in detail in The 5000 Year Leap on this site as a permanent set of notes to quickly come back to and as an introduction to anyone starting their education. This book should be read and studied in its entirety more than once so this summation should not be considered a replacement for actually reading the book. After completing this book the news of the day will take on a completely new meaning to you. The arguments being made in support of things like government health care, bank regulation and cap and trade will seem completely ridiculous and obviously outside the scope of our federal government to anyone who understands our system.
The Road to Serfdom is a book that changed the way people thought after World War 2 and was taught in our schools in the 1950's. I contend that had we continued to teach this book that the Progressive march to socialism in America would have been halted long ago as people would know why and in no uncertain terms that centralized planning and big government cannot work and eventually leads to total government and loss of liberty. The book is by economist F.A Hayek, originally published in 1945 and available here in a condensed version. The condensed version of this book provides enough information and details for most people but the full book is something I recommend as it is filled with historical backing for the theories being proposed.
A Patriot's History of the United States is a 1300 page monster of a history book dating from Columbus to the War on Terror. The book contains over 200 pages of footnotes backing up the various facts and assertions made throughout the book. The chapter dealing with the early 20th century progressive era is alone worth the price of the book.
Step 2 - Educating Others
For parents of school age kids if you are not already carefully monitoring what your children are being taught it is time to start doing so. It is important to look for both inaccurate and incomplete historical information. Your children need to be taught the 28 principles outlined in the 5000 Year Leap from as early an age as possible. If your children know the history and principles of our nation it will be very hard to attract them to the progressive causes many college students inevitably are drawn to.
As a parent, becoming a member of the PTA will allow you to convey your concerns about what is being taught and what is not being taught to the teachers. The teachers like most people are just as likely to be ignorant to the real history of our founding. We need to become the ones responsible for the education of our children with the teacher being your assistant. If you approach it from this mindset then it makes sense that you may need to provide guidance to your assistant if their teaching is inappropriate or incomplete. You may need to educate the educator.
Like our children, our friends, neighbors, co-workers and church members are all within our sphere of influence to discuss the founding principles of our nation. I'm always amazed at the low level of awareness that most people I speak to have about our system of government and the changes currently taking place. Most people believe that most of the world has a similar form of government to ours and enjoy similar levels of freedom and prosperity. Would it surprise them to know that 85% of the world lives below the level we consider to be the poverty line here in America? Was it an accident that after 100 years of our system that with only 5% of the world's population and 6% of the world's land area we produced over 50% of the world economic output. Real poverty as compared to anywhere else in the world had been eliminated in America. For some reason though the Progressives saw only the inequality of our system and set out to spread that amazing wealth out equally. In doing so they have slowly destroyed the economic engine that created that prosperity in the first place condemning us all to an eventual meager existence. We need to teach people that you own your efforts and that no man has any right to claim a portion of them.
