  • March 23, 1775 is the day Patrick Henry gave his famous "Give me liberty or give me death" speech. Listen to the speech and how it pertains to the health care bill that was ironically signed on the same day 230 years later.

The supply of energy needed to power the economy of the United States is without a doubt the most important and most complex issue facing us today. It essentially boils down to three factors, cost, environmental impact and stability. There's a saying that we use for developing software that applies to the energy issue. Cheap, fast and high quality; pick two out of three. If you want it fast and cheap then the quality will be low. If you want it fast and to be of high quality then it won't be cheap. I think you get the idea.

With energy if you want it cheap and green then don't plan on it being stable. Solar and wind can be done cheap but don't hook your life support machine up to that power grid. Likewise if you want cheap and stable energy then it is not going to be green. So essentially what the energy issue boils down to is striking the right balance between cost, the environment and stability. Going forward advances in technology can alter the equation but until that happens if you push too hard on any one factor then something has to give on one of the others.

A great example of this is the governments attempt to force current green energy technologies on the system. Due to the fact that they are very unstable sources of energy you need to spend a ton of money to try and make them reliable. To be able to understand the problem we need to look at the various sources of energy, their cost and their impact on the environment. One important thing to keep in mind when we talk about stability is that having to import an energy source makes it a great deal less stable.

From The Gods of the Copybook Headings by Rudyard Kipling
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return.
